History Up until the mid 90’s, Dawson County Communication Services served a dual-purpose position. The individual served as the communication officer and the detention officer, which was located at the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center. The number of calls for service have increased tremendously since that time. In the late 1990’s Dawson County progressed by hiring one detention officer per shift. Therefore freeing up the communication officer to dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls, which continued to be dispatched out of the sheriff’s office and detention center. In the spring of 1996, Dawson County began to enter into the 911 systems, which was funded by S.P.L.O.S.T. At the time the 911 system began, fire, EMS, and sheriff calls continued to be dispatched from the Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center. Emergency calls were taken in a separate location. In 1997, the 911 system was implemented and had moved from the Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center to the Fout’s building, now the K.H. Long Government Center on GA Hwy 53 West. The Center moved to its new location in the Dawson County Law Enforcement Center in October 2007. Today we receive approximately 335 calls a day. This total includes administrative calls as well as dispatched events for the Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Services.

Total Events
This chart reflects the calls that were received in the 911 Center. These totals include both administrative and dispatched calls; the totals would be higher however during peak call times not every administrative or duplicate call is cadded. Example: Motor Vehicle Accident on GA 400, we can receive a call from each passerby that has a cell phone, the ones that do not have a cell phone will drive to the nearest convenience store and call in the accident. Time and manpower does not allow us to CAD each call.
