Dawson County has over 50 miles of shoreline on Lake Lanier, two rivers, and numerous small bodies of water that necessitate the need for a dive team. Over the years, divers have been utilized to recover stolen vehicles and property from local boat ramps and rivers. Additionally, the Dawson County Dive Team assists with body recoveries.

In 2010, the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office reformed the Underwater Search and Recovery Team (USRT) by certifying each member as a public safety diver through Emergency Response Diving International. The Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Services dive teams merged to share units and resources.

The USRT received a grant from the Laci and Conner Search and Rescue Fund in the amount of $2,000.00 for a side-scan sonar unit. This unit assists divers in the search for items underwater without unnecessarily endangering the lives of divers. This gracious donation has greatly improved the safety and success of the USRT.

An aggressive training program has been outlined to continue preparing members of the USRT for safe and effective recoveries. This team strives for maximum efficiency during each operation.
