K9 Unit The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office has five K-9 teams. Three of these teams are assigned to the Patrol Division. The other two teams are assigned to the North Georgia K-9 Task Force. The K-9 Task Force, funded by a grant from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, has been in existence for several years. In 2004, the Dawson County Sheriff's Office took over as the primary administrator of the grant. The K-9 Task Force has one narcotic/ tracking team and one explosive detection team. They have a ten county response area and are on-call 24 hours a day. These counties are Dawson, Hall, Forsyth, Lumpkin, White, Towns, Union, Pickens, Fannin and Gilmer. The Patrol Division has two narcotics detection/ tracking teams and one narcotics detection/ tracking and patrol work team.

Lieutenant Ken Jarrard and Rex Lieutenant Jarrard has been with the Sheriff's Office since 1995. He was certified as a K-9 handler in 2002. He obtained Rex in 2004 as a result of a drug money seizure. Rex is three year old Malinois that is trained in narcotics detection, tracking, and patrol work.

Sergeant Fred Yarbrough and Yoki Sergeant Fred Yarbrough is a 14-year law enforcement veteran. Prior to beginning his law enforcement career; he served in the United States Marines for four years. He is a certified P.O.S.T. Instructor, Firearms Instructor, and Defensive Tactics Instructor. Sergeant Yarbrough has previously worked in the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigation Division, Training and Accreditation, and now serves as the Commander of the North Georgia K-9 Task Force. The Task Force is funded by the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council and currently consists of two K-9 handlers that respond to calls for service from nine counties throughout North Georgia. K-9 Yoki is a four year old Shepherd and is a certified Explosive Detection Dog. The team re-certifies annually and continues to train throughout the year to maintain proficiency in detecting military and civilian explosives.

Deputy Mark Caruana and Mikie Deputy Mark Caruana is an nine year veteran of law enforcement. He handles Hurricane Mike, a three year old Bloodhound that was donated to the Sheriff's Office by the Kody Snodgrass Memorial Foundation. When the search is for a missing person, a bloodhound and its handler may be the single most important resource for law enforcement. When a child is missing, no stone should be left unturned in their efforts of location, and trained bloodhounds have been used for centuries for this very purpose. Deputy Chase Johns and Risso Corporal Chase Johns serves as one of our Traffic Enforcement Officers. He obtained his partner, Risso, in 2006. Risso is a three year old Shepherd that specializes in narcotics detection and tracking.
