School Resource Officer Program

In the early 1990’s then Lt. Billy Carlisle became Dawson County’s first school resource and DARE officer. Since that time Carlisle has became known as Sheriff Carlisle, but his love for the children of our community has continued. It is for this reason that he and his staff have worked to secure federal funding and grants to assign uniformed officers to our schools. The officers handle traffic direction at their school in the morning and remain at the school the entire day. They are there to ensure that our children have a safe place to learn and play. The officers also provide various classes and programs to the students at their prospective schools. If you would like to contact the officer assigned to your child’s school, feel free to do so. Lt. Tony Wooten supervises these officers and can be contacted with general questions or concerns. The officers can be reached by calling the school directly or by contacting the sheriff’s office. Below you will find the name of the officer assigned to each school. These officers are part of your sheriff’s office and are there to serve and protect you and your children.

CHAMPS - Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety

The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office has been teaching a drug resistance program to all fifth grade students for over ten years. This program is part of a state wide effort to keep our young people off drugs. Many times we are asked if we feel the program is effective. Our answer to this is yes. We have seen the results first hand over the last few years. The program also allows these young people to interact with law enforcement in a non-threatening manner. This allows the students to understand that we are there to help them not to hurt them. The relationships developed between the officer and the students they teach continue for years to come.

If you would like to learn more about this program, contact Lt. Tony Wooten.
