In the winter of 2000-2001, the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office started a new program to assist the senior citizens in our community. The company that had been contracted by the county to pave several of the county roads needed a place to dispose of the trees they were removing. At that time members of the sheriff’s office got involved and came up with a way to help those who may not be able to help themselves. The company would bring the logs to a location behind the jail and dump them. A member of our staff, who was assisted with inmate labor, then cut the wood into firewood length. The criminal investigations division got involved in the project about this time as well. They had arrested an individual for selling illegal drugs here in the county. During the arrest and prosecution of the individual a wide variety of property and assets were seized. One of the pieces of property was a large wood splitter. The sheriff’s office was eventually awarded the wood splitter in a court order and decided to put it to use in this project. During the winter approximately thirty loads of wood were hauled to seniors living in Dawson County. The wood was taken to individuals who primarily used wood to heat their homes, those that could not afford to purchase wood, and those who could no longer physically cut and haul their own wood. In order to ensure only those who are in need received the wood, the sheriff’s office partnered with the Senior Center to evaluate and approve all applications for firewood. The sheriff’s office plans to continue this service for many years to come. If you or someone you know is in need of firewood for the winter, you can contact Margie Weaver the Director of the Dawson County Senior Center at (706) 344-3700.
